Romans 2:28-29 - A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly

Praise the Lord!

A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.

The apostle Paul is basically saying that a relationship with God is not achieved through external actions, but internal change. This means that our emphasis should not be conformity that looks good on the outside, but the posture of our heart toward God. You may say, “Than I am hopeless, because I know that I am far from God.” The good news is if any man or woman turns back to the Lord, the Holy Spirit is faithful to begin a process that writes new passion into our heart. God wants to cut off the old fleshly ways and bring new life into our souls.
