Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

 

 

Jesus was teaching his Jewish disciples that trying to modify external behaviors are not the way to determine what is clean or unclean before God—our heart is the culprit of our uncleanness. When we understand this teaching, we realize that we don’t need Jesus as a Savior once; we need His saving power every day! Yet this is what God offers to us. Christ came to cleanse our hearts. His death and resurrection opened the door for the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and convict us of sin then lead us to Jesus. So rejoice that Jesus gives us the ability to walk with a clean conscience. This is the benefit of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
